Nokia has announced that it is expanding Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync to all of its Symbian S60 3rd Edition handsets.Mail for Exchange mobile email app on 43 Nokia mobile phones, which will make Nokia’s range the largest ever to enable the solution. This will make an estimated 80 million devices compatible with the push email messaging service.
The Nokia-Microsoft announcement comes at an interesting time. As if we haven't been banging on about it enough, Nokia has its best potential iPhone-beater gearing up for imminent launch and a few extra business functions certainly won't hurt its chances.
S60 also has other announcements up its sleeve too -
* iTunes is heavily rumoured to be on its way, offering full synchronisation, full iTunes Store functionality and even remote control of desktop players.Along with iPlayer support announced the other day, leads us to the suspicion that Nokia and its Symbian partners are now carefully strengthening their hand ahead of Google's launch of Android.
*Opera, the pioneering web browser maker, has announced that it has signed up to the Symbian Foundation too.
While there's no hard evidence to suggest that Android will necessarily outclass other mobile platforms yet, its decision to go open source alone gives it a cost advantage in the long run over rivals who charge for licensing.
Executive Vice President, Markets, Nokia, Anssi Vanjoki, said that “The Nokia-Microsoft collaboration to bring corporate mobile email to businesses and mobile professionals is truly unbeatable."
He also added that" No other device manufacturer provides the wide range of devices that we have which immediately mobilize the hundreds of millions of email accounts from Microsoft Exchange.”

The mobile phone giant's warning that it is losing market share to rivals who are undercutting it spooked the markets late last week, and with it major suppliers such as STMicroelectronics, Texas. However, Nokia's problem does not seem to be confined to uneconomic price cutting at the low-end.The problem, or problems, are likely to be temporary, but it must still have been galling for Nokia to admit that its long period of gaining market share in mobiles, which seems to have been almost uninterrupted over the past few years, is stalling.
It tried to sweeten the pill by stressing the decline in market share is a consequence of it not willing to get into a price war for low-end phones. This is being waged not only by one of the major competitors, such as Samsung and lately Motorola — as it tries to beef up volumes ahead of its planned demerger of the mobiles unit — but, importantly, from smaller Asian handset makers, including Chinese ones, who are aggressively trying to gain share now-a-days.
Analysts have also been suggesting, Nokia itself has not been immune from an element of price cutting and the bottom line here is competition has ramped up substantially, and this will not go away quickly. As Richard Windsor, analyst at Nomura Securities noted, Nokia is by far the lowest cost producer and if it can't make money at these prices, then probably no one can make money.
Of course, Nokia is not the only one to have indicated recently that it is feeling the pinch, and that consumer confidence is weakening.Sony Ericsson has issued two profit warnings so far this year, and Samsung, the number two player in cellphones, admitted it, too, is losing market share amidst signs of a slowdown.

Today's compact cameras have to meet strict requirements if they want to succeed in the strongly competitive market. The Sony Cybershot W170 is a camera of an entirely different range. One that aims at the crowd, and in fact the largest target group; the entry-level photographer. The first quarter of a year tends to be the busiest period for most manufacturers, since many introductions are usually made at that specific time. In January, , the CES in Las Vegas; which generally forms the start of the first camera introductions kicked off the first large consumer electronics. The Sony W170 is a model of the W-series; models that aim at a straightforward operation, yet, are equipped with the latest innovative techniques.
The Sony Cybershot W170 is equipped with a 10 Megapixels CCD sensor, making it one of the highest resolution W-cameras, except for the W300 which features 13 Megapixels. For those keen on figures; the following comparison with a 10 Megapixel Sony Alpha might be of interest to you. Pro ratio, there are approximately 35 million pixels on one square cm of the W170's sensor, whereas the Sony Alpha 300 has 2.7 million pixels. Both cameras offer 10 Megapixels of image resolution.
